The term “visitation” refers to the time the child is with one of his/her parents. Visitation is often interchanged with the term “parenting”—which is actually a better word. There are almost an infinite amount of possibilities for visitation. A parent can have the child from one day per year to 364 days per year. The parent may pick up the child in the morning or in the evening, or a parent may have the child for only a few hours.
The terms of the visitation, such as what can and cannot be done during this time, are also nearly infinite. In rare circumstances, a court may order that a parent’s visitation/parenting time be supervised by a professional. Courts can also restrict where the child will stay at night, who can or cannot be there, how far away they may go away from home, and so on.
